EVS - Lucile ja Giovanna

Tänä vuonna koulussamme toimi vapaaehtoistyöntekijöinä Lucile Ranskasta ja Giovanna Italiasta. He tulivat Kälviälle EVS:n (European Volunteer Service) kautta.
Lucille ja Giovanna

Lucile
Minä olen Lucile, olen 22 vuotias ja olen ranskalainen. Olen suemesa koska olen vappa-ehtoinen. Nyt asun Kälviällä.

Let's come back to english now, you just saw the extent of my knowledge in Finnish...

I arrived in Finland on January, 18th as a European Volunteer. Indeed, after I got my degree in Foreign Languages, I felt like I needed to have a break in my studies and gain some experience before starting a Master Program. So here I am now: working in Kälviä, assisting teachers and helping pupils (in fact I think this project was made for me: my dream job is to become a French teacher abroad!).

I enjoy living and working here: Kälviä is a small village, cosy, quiet and peaceful. I am sure I met the kindest people around Finland - and around all over the world also - and even if some shadows have darkened this experience, those first months in the Kokkola area have been truly AMAZING. I will never get rid of the beautiful landscapes around there, of the funny finnish sounds to my ears, of walking in the snow during winter, of discovering the small peculiarities in the way of living in Finland, etc.

I still have more than 2 months to live this amazing experience, and then I'll go back to France and to the daily routine I used to have, but I will also be with my family and friends and I will have amazing stories to tell them!

I hope we will meet again! Visit me whenever you want in France!
Giovanna
Hello everybody! After several ex EVS volunteers’ abstracts I had been reading before coming to Finland, now it’s my turn to write something about my experience :) I am Giovanna Tanzi, I’m 23 years old, and I come from Italy.

Why did I choose Finland? I really don’t know, it was Finland which chose me; and this has been the most rewarding experience I’ve ever done! Working in this school is really amazing and challenging, above all concerning the relationship with students. In the beginning they could seem a little bit silent and shy, as everybody in Finland, and in fact I stretched to make them talk when my project started and I had lessons with them, but as they had become more confident with me, then they began showing how warm-hearted are they. School staff is really kind and helpful, I am surrounded with plenty of teachers supporting me for every kind of problems :)

Let’s talk about Finland! Well, impressions could be really different, depending on your behavior and customs, but surely the first impact is really overwhelming! The weather, the cold, the snowstorms, the food (which is really upsetting, they just eat potatoes and soup with a lot of cream inside), the way of living totally indoor and so forth.

Anyway no worry, when the cultural shock goes away and disappears, then you begin appreciate this reality. The landscape is breathtaking with the snow and the breeze during the morning, the land vastness, the nature, and the sweets (really Finns always eat sweet things with coffee), the littles villages everywhere, houses in the middle of the woods, and the huge quantity of technologic items they are provided with.

This experience it’s what I was looking for before coming here. I graduated in Political Sciences and International Relations and I needed to go abroad to try what will be my career path in the future. In Finland people are very professional and you can acquire the best from them, and they really trust you and rely on your work, which makes you feel rather useful and satisfied.

However the worst is Finnish language! Generally speaking, one doesn’t need it to live in Finland, but once you are here, somebody could be willing to learn it. It’s not easy, and maybe easy to study, but difficult to speak and understand. Never mind!
Everything is challenging in Finland, that´s because you can feel its beauty every day. This is a country for brave and dignified people ;)

EVS - Max ja Elodie

Hej hej! My name is Max Liebmann, I’m 19 years old and I come from Germany.
Since September 2014 I’m doing my European Voluntary Service (short: EVS) at the Lucina Hagman school in Kälviä.
The first thing people like to ask when they meet me is “Why the hell did you choose Finland?!” and usually I answer with a small story from my childhood. My parents and I always went for vacation with our caravan in summer, usually to Sweden. One year we planned to do a big tour around Scandinavia over Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Baltic countries and back to Germany, but we got stuck in Norway because it was so beautiful there. Ever since this vacation I was wondering how Finland would be like. Later on I discovered the truly great Finnish music scene and fell in love with some of its bands. Reasons enough for me to go to Finland…
The next question people would ask is “How do you like it here in Finland?”.
On one hand I really love Finland for all it has given to me. This stay here has been really important to my personal development and it’s not an exaggeration to say that it has changed my life in one way or another. I have found some really good friends here and it’s so fascinating to see how a country can change so incredibly much from winter to summer. Also the work at school was a great experience for me. I had the great chance to get a very deep insight into the working life of a teacher plus all that comes with it. And I enjoyed it.
There were some hard things as well. The dark and long winter was tough and my language course was more like a language curse. Don’t get this wrong: Finnish IS a beautiful language, but for foreigners just really hard to learn.
But well! Now summer is coming and I have only a few weeks left in my project. My plan was to stay in Finland until midsummer and then go back to Germany, where a whole new (or maybe old) world will wait for me… Elämä on.

Hi!
my name is Elodie, I’m a French volunteer from the European voluntary  service program. I spend 6 month here in Finland (december-june). I had help the teachers for different lessons, but most for the French lessons. I enjoyed my time here, all the students and teachers are nice. This experience was very helpful for me since I start studying for being a teacher in September in France. I can say now I saw the (so famous) Finnish educational system! I deeply recommend young people (18-30) to do it, your share different cultures with different people (for example here in Kokkola, you can find volunteers from Ireland, England, Slovakia, Liechtenstein, Germany, and France of course!) and you learn a lot about you and the others.
I hope I will see you again one day, in your new school! J

EVS - Louise

Moï,
Louise from France is speaking. Volunteer from the program “European Volunteer Service”, I´d been working in Lucina Hagman Koulu, and living in Finland during 7 months.
My volunteer work consisted in many different topics as: assisting teachers in language courses, replacing teachers, creating some tools for entertaining courses, sharing my culture… In sum, I would say that my volunteer work was about HELPING. I made myself available for others, and there is no better feeling than that.
My life in Finland was a life of autonomy and travelling. In everyday life I had to manage everything on my own, and, when time permitted it, I could explore around (South and North –even further to Norway), “dive” in the finish culture, different from mine.
I strongly encourage all the youngsters (between 18 and 30 years old), to take contact with a local organization (here in Kokkola it´s Villa Elba) and take part to an EVS program (which could last 1 month to 1 year) in another country in Europe. This is the best experience ever.
 Heippa !

EVS - Clémence

Hi everyone !

I’m a volunteer in this school for more than 6 months already but I don’t think all the students know who I’m… so there is!
My name is Clémence (and since I’m in Finland, I noticed it’s not the easiest name to pronounce..!). I’m from Belgium, more precisely from Ath, a town in the French board (because, even if my country is not that big, we speak 3 different languages there, with Dutch and German in addition to French). I never had the chance to travel during my childhood, just twice with the school and for short days. That’s why, when I was 17, I decided to take the matter into my own hands. My principal aim was to improve my English but, in the same time, be close to the people and not study. By luck, I discovered the European Volunteer Service (EVS) and knew directly it was for me. I applied for some projects in the Nordic Countries, being attracted by them for some years but I don’t really know why. After a stressful period without getting any news, a hosting organization contacted me finally.
In September, I took the first time of my life the plane. I discovered a new country I really like, I travelled in, I met a lot of different people from all the Europe, I learned to live by myself, without my parents for doing the meals or laundries, I saw how the schools are working here, … and my English really improved even if it’s still not perfect.
Arriving almost to the end of my EVS, thinking about my future studies in Belgium and how will my life be after this exceptional experience, I’m just more than grateful to all the people I met here, the teachers and students included. :)

EVS - Mladen

Hei!

Minun nimeni on Mladen Blazheski.

Minun kotikaupunkini on Prilep.
