Hej
hej! My name is Max Liebmann, I’m 19 years old and I come from Germany.
Since
September 2014 I’m doing my European Voluntary Service (short: EVS) at the
Lucina Hagman school in Kälviä.
The
first thing people like to ask when they meet me is “Why the hell did you
choose Finland?!” and usually I answer with a small story from my childhood. My
parents and I always went for vacation with our caravan in summer, usually to
Sweden. One year we planned to do a big tour around Scandinavia over Sweden,
Norway, Finland, the Baltic countries and back to Germany, but we got stuck in
Norway because it was so beautiful there. Ever since this vacation I was
wondering how Finland would be like. Later on I discovered the truly great
Finnish music scene and fell in love with some of its bands. Reasons enough for
me to go to Finland…
The
next question people would ask is “How do you like it here in Finland?”.
On
one hand I really love Finland for all it has given to me. This stay here has
been really important to my personal development and it’s not an exaggeration
to say that it has changed my life in one way or another. I have found some
really good friends here and it’s so fascinating to see how a country can
change so incredibly much from winter to summer. Also the work at school was a
great experience for me. I had the great chance to get a very deep insight into
the working life of a teacher plus all that comes with it. And I enjoyed it.
There
were some hard things as well. The dark and long winter was tough and my language
course was more like a language curse. Don’t get this wrong: Finnish IS a
beautiful language, but for foreigners just really hard to learn.
But
well! Now summer is coming and I have only a few weeks left in my project. My
plan was to stay in Finland until midsummer and then go back to Germany, where
a whole new (or maybe old) world will wait for me… Elämä on.

Hi!
my name is Elodie, I’m a French volunteer from
the European voluntary service program. I
spend 6 month here in Finland (december-june). I had help the teachers for
different lessons, but most for the French lessons. I enjoyed my time here, all
the students and teachers are nice. This experience was very helpful for me
since I start studying for being a teacher in September in France. I can say
now I saw the (so famous) Finnish educational system! I deeply recommend young
people (18-30) to do it, your share different cultures with different people
(for example here in Kokkola, you can find volunteers from Ireland, England,
Slovakia, Liechtenstein, Germany, and France of course!) and you learn a lot
about you and the others.
I hope I will see you again one day, in your
new school! J
Elodie
